The Latest News and Offshore Jobs

Welcome to the weekly newsletter for the latest news on shipping, offshore and drilling industries with the latest jobs. This newsletter has the latest news stories and information on offshore employment, shipping, new projects and more. For those looking at working offshore or within the maritime industries this will give you some basic information on what is happening in the offshore industry and what jobs are there and more importantly for new entry people what qualifications and experience is required.

I am in the offshore drilling industry and have been for 30 years and I have no interest or other attachment to any company or operator or employment company. The site is funded by people clicking on advertising only. The site offers no easy money or easy job advice, as there isn’t any and times are tough in the industry as well.

Do not pay anyone and do not pay or register for any scheme on any website that says they will help you find an offshore job. You will never get a job this way and you will lose your money and maybe a lot more. You can get your own jobs by approaching drilling companies, and while there are agencies that supply people however they don’t charge you either. Do not pay money for a huge list of offshore companies, most are irrelevant to yourself and would not accept applications, or in many cases the job address is unreliable. These sites even have the company information wrong and clearly don’t work in the industry.

Every company has different ways of having candidates submit a Resume or CV, some are by email and other will only accept by registering on the website. Do not respond or deal with any company or respond to an email that purports to be recruiting for a drilling or other offshore company, you must go to them directly. Do not be misled with any person or company who uses a company logo or other trademark to legitimize their activities. In some cases job hunters are being contacted directly, by phone and e-mail in phishing scams. Do not be suckered in with these people. They typically offer high paying jobs and request that you send money to pay for visa applications and processing fees, or they may request your personal banking information. DO NOT DO THIS! No offshore drilling or other company requests any type of advance payment as part of any recruiting or hiring process, and never will any ask for personal banking information in an e-mail communication. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED Many of these advertise and guarantee that they will have your details out and you will be working within weeks and even days. Sorry buts it’s not going to happen!

I am still expanding and adding information and currently adding drilling company information by company and also the current job vacancies and how to submit an application and each drilling company page will have the latest job vacancies for that company listed. As jobs come and go daily the general jobs vacant pages will be updated weekly as well so do come and check regularly.

Also the newsletter has had many people sign up and this will give latest REAL employment opportunities and industry news. It helps for new entry candidates to learn as much as they can about what is going on, knowing something helps your chances

Drilling News

US drilling activity was little changed from a week ago, down just 1 unit with 1,040 rotary rigs working the week ended Oct. 16 according to Baker Hughs. This compares with 1,976 rigs drilling in the same period last year. The loss was in land operations, down by 3 to 996 still active. Drilling in inland waters was up by 2 rigs to 11. Offshore drilling was unchanged with 33 rigs working in US waters, including 32 in the Gulf of Mexico. Of the rigs still working, 309 were drilling for oil, 4 more than the previous week. There were 721 rotary rigs drilling for natural gas, 5 fewer than previous. There were 10 rigs unclassified. Directional drilling was down 3 units to 181. Horizontal drilling increased by 2 rigs to 465. Among the major producing states, North Dakota’s weekly rig count increased by 5 to 53. New Mexico was up 3 to 48. Louisiana and Wyoming gained 1 each to respective counts of 160 and 40. California and Alaska were unchanged at 22 and 6, respectively. Arkansas lost 1 rig to 38. Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado dropped 3 rigs each, with respective totals of 394, 74, and 36. In other states, Pennsylvania increased by 1 rig to 57 drilling. Utah lost 2 to 15, and West Virginia was unchanged at 21. The Canadian rig count increased by 11 to 250 rotary rigs working, down sharply from 437 a year ago.

Diamond Offshore Drilling has bought the newbuild 7,500-ft, dynamically positioned semisubmersible PetroRig II and renamed it the Ocean Valor. Diamond Offshore bought the construction contract from PetroRig II Pte. Ltd. for $490 million exclusive of initial mobilization costs, final commissioning, drillstring, and necessary spares. In late June, Diamond Offshore bought the newbuild dynamically positioned semisubmersible offshore drilling unit PetroRig I and renamed it the Ocean Courage

Offshore Incident BP has shut down production after the 75500 grt shuttle tanker Loch Rannoch collided with the Schiehallion floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) which is permanently stationed 175 miles west of Shetland. A total of 120 people were on the BP platform at the time of the incident. No one was injured and there was no oil spilt. The incidents is likely to halt production for up to six months.

New Drillship Order Brazil's state-owned oil company Petrobras intends to officially announce next week its plan to order 28 drillships worth some $17bn. Nine ships will be owned by Petrobras and the rest will be chartered from other owners. The newbuildings need to be delivered between 2014 and 2017. The first package of seven drillships will be ordered from one shipbuilder. The four shipbuilders including Samsung, Daewoo, STX and Sungdong are reportedly in the running. The Brazilian energy major is said to need significant offshore plants worth up to $42.5bn and this could break the protracted orders drought in the global shipbuilding industry. On the same day, Brazil's iron ore supplier Vale expressed its intention to order 11 VLOC carriers worth around $1bn from Daewoo and STX of South Korea..

New Ship Order In what is a comatose and stagnant new building market, a Middle East oil tanker operator signed the first container ship order anywhere in the world since October 2008. The Abu Dhabi National Tanker Company placed an order for two gearless box ships of 1,060 20-foot equivalent units capacity at South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The shipping unit of the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company is paying just over $19 million for each of the 13,000-deadweight-ton ships which are due for delivery in June and July 2011. The company negotiated a significant discount on the price, with similar sized vessels quoted at $25 million at the end of 2008 and $27.5 million in December 2007 when orders for box ships were at a peak. The deal is the first box ship contract in 2009 and compares with 208 vessels ordered in 2008, 545 in 2007 and 464 in 2006.

Cheap Ships Modern second-hand containerships also are being sold at steep discounts as charter owners seek to cut their losses in the current depressed market. A consortium of German ship-owners and finance houses recently paid $21.5 million each for a pair of 2008-built 1,700-TEU ships from Hong Kong’s Cido Shipping -- less than half the $45 million being paid for similar feeder vessels eighteen months ago. The vessels are on charter to South Korea’s STX Pan Ocean until mid-2011 at a daily rate of $16,500. Current rates for similar sized ships average just $4,250 a day.

Pirates Hijack Container Ship Somali pirates have attached and hijacked a Singapore-flagged container ship. The Kota Wajar was seized around 300 nautical miles north the Seychelles. The ship had 21 crew members and was bound for Kenyan port of Mombasa. The attack took place early Thursday, just 24 nautical miles from the site of recent attacks on French tuna-fishing boats. The latest hijacking brings to at least six the number of vessels in the hands of Somali pirates. The others include a Spanish trawler, a Taiwanese fishing vessel and Ukrainian, German and Turkish freighters. More than 110 crew members are currently being held hostage. There has been a total of 174 attacks by Somali pirates since the start of 2009, 49 of them were successful hijackings. A 30 strong flotilla of foreign warships is patrolling the Gulf of Aden, and now pirates are striking much further out using mother ships. . Pirates focus most of their attacks on transitional weather periods between monsoons when the seas are quiet enough for them to operate from small fiberglass skiffs.

French Marines Battle with Pirates Marines posted on board two French fishing vessels in the Indian Ocean fired on and repelled two pirate boats in the early hours of Saturday morning. The Drennec and Glenan are reported to have been approached by the launches 195 miles north of the Seychelles. French marines first fired flares, then warning shots, and finally fired on the boats when they received small arms fire in return. The Seychelles coastguard and EU naval forces serving as part of the Atalanta task force apparently captured the boats and the mother ship, arresting 11 men.

Singapore Pirate Attack A pirate attack in the Singapore Strait was foiled by a vigilant crew. Navigation officers of the watch aboard the Latana - a 6,882dwt products tanker owned by Titan Petrochemicals in Hong Kong, spotted a small boat alongside to starboard. It was crewed by six men, two of whom climbed aboard at the poop deck. The officers sounded the general alarm and mustered the crew. The boarders disembarked and the small vessel departed. No one was hurt in the incident and nothing was stolen. In September this year, the 70,000dwt tanker Pacific Harmony was targeted by two men in a small boat, and that was followed by the suspicious approach to the 7,000dwt chemical tanker MMM Kingston.

Pirate Hostage for 6 Months A Taiwanese deep-sea fishing boat hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean in April is still docked in Somalia but its crew is safe. The Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said this after the Taipei-based China Times daily reported that same day that the Win Far 161, a tuna longliner, has been used by Somali pirates to attack foreign merchant vessels and even to open fire upon U.S. military aircraft. He also stated that the Taiwanese shipowner is still negotiating with Somali pirates over the amount of ransom needed to get the vessel back and that no progress has been made (as the owner simply doesn’t want to pay or negotiate). The Win Far 161 was hijacked near an island in the Seychelles April 6 (So the poor crew have been hostage more than 6 months!) . Of its 30-strong crew, the ship's skipper and first engineer are Taiwanese, while five other are Chinese, 17 are Filipinos and six are Indonesian.

The Germans Stop Pirate Attack The German warship Bremen intervened against suspected pirates. A helicopter from the EU Navfor warship identified suspected pirate craft in the Somali Basin. The suspected craft were made up of a mother skiff and two smaller skiffs, near the islands of Seychelles. The EU Navfor helicopter fired warning shots and the skiffs stopped. The crew from the helicopter observed that the suspected pirates threw a number of items over board. A boarding party from the German warship found on the skiff grappling hooks, ammunition, GPS and ten barrels of fuel. The skiffs had no fishing equipment on board and after confiscating the suspected pirate equipment the mother skiff and crew were released”

Ship Attack in Philippines The OOCL Taichung containership was reportedly been robbed at the anchorage of Manila South Harbour while anchored 2 nm outside the breakwater at the weekend when an unknown number of raiders boarded the ship and took away property.

More Japanese Warships Go to Fight Pirates Japan sent two Maritime Self-Defense Forces (MSDF) destroyers Tuesday on an antipiracy mission off Somalia to replace the two operating since July. The 4,650-ton Takanami and 3,550-ton Hamagiri, with some 410 personnel aboard, departed early Tuesday from their base in Yokosuka. In March they ordered the dispatch of two MSDF destroyers on an antipiracy mission off Somalia, marking Japan's first overseas policing action under the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) law. Under Article 82 of the SDF Law, which governs policing action on the seas, the MSDF warships could protect only Japan-related vessels, including Japanese-registered ships and foreign vessels with Japanese nationals or shipments aboard. In June the Diet enacted an antipiracy law authorizing the Self-Defense Forces to protect any commercial ship from pirates, regardless of its connection to Japan. It also enables the SDF to open fire on pirate vessels that, despite warning shots, continue to close in on other ships.

Container Ship LayupsThe number of laid up containerships increased 10.4 per cent in a fortnight, according to the latest Alphaliner survey, which showed 568 ships were idle, aggregating 1.35 million TEU as of October 12 from the 548 idle vessels, totaling 1.29 million TEU, noted two weeks earlier. The Paris-based agency said laid up fleet is now the biggest ever. Apart from ships in the 1,000-TEU - 2,000 TEU range (7,500-TEU plus sized ships lay-up rate remained steady), all sizes showed increases in idling during the two-week period.

Big Dredging Contract Boskalis has won a € 500 million LNG project in Australia for the construction of a port for the Gorgon LNG project off the coast of Western Australia and was awarded by Chevron Australia Pty Ltd in cooperation with Kellogg Joint Venture - Gorgon. Work is set to commence early 2010 and it is due to be completed by the end of 2011. The project includes the design and construct of a port including a Material Offloading Facility at Barrow Island, 50km northwest off the coast of Western Australia. Various dredging & marine contracting activities will be constructed under the responsibility of Boskalis. Cruise Ship for New Zealand P&O Cruises will launch The Pacific Pearl cruise liner in Auckland and the vessel will be based in the city. The Pacific Pearl will be launched on December 19 next year. The 63,500 tonne vessel will be able to carry 1800 passengers. This is the first time the company has launched a vessel in New Zealand. The cruise liner business has been expanding rapidly in New Zealand. Ports of Auckland handled 69 cruise ships in the year to June 30. It will continue to handle cruise ships while no longer owning Queens Wharf and expects the number of arrivals to fall to 63 or 64 ships this season due to the economic downturn.

Container Traffic Slowdown. Container traffic in Rotterdam fell 13 percent in the first nine months of 2009 from a year ago, a slight improvement on the 15 percent drop in first half volume. Rotterdam handled 7.2 million 20-foot equivalent units in the January- September period, ensuring it will hold on to its top European ranking ahead of second and third placed Hamburg and Antwerp. The total volume of cargo fell 11.9 percent in the first three quarters to 283 million metric tons as all sectors reported lower traffic, with iron and scrap metal plunging 66 percent, dry bulk shrinking 33 percent and crude oil declining 7 percent.
