The Latest News and Offshore Jobs

Welcome to the weekly newsletter for the latest news on shipping, offshore and drilling industries with the latest jobs. This newsletter has the latest news stories and information on offshore employment, shipping, new projects and more. For those looking at working offshore or within the maritime industries this will give you some basic information on what is happening in the offshore industry and what jobs are there and more importantly for new entry people what qualifications and experience is required.

Do not pay anyone and do not pay or register for any scheme on any website that says they will help you find an offshore job. You will never get a job this way and you will lose your money and maybe a lot more. You can get your own jobs by approaching drilling companies, and while there are agencies that supply people however they don’t charge you either. Do not pay money for a huge list of offshore companies, most are irrelevant to yourself and would not accept applications, or in many cases the job address is unreliable. These sites even have the company information wrong and clearly don’t work in the industry.

Every company has different ways of having candidates submit a Resume or CV, some are by email and other will only accept by registering on the website. Do not respond or deal with any company or respond to an email that purports to be recruiting for a drilling or other offshore company, you must go to them directly. Do not be misled with any person or company who uses a company logo or other trademark to legitimize their activities. In some cases job hunters are being contacted directly, by phone and e-mail in phishing scams. Do not be suckered in with these people. They typically offer high paying jobs and request that you send money to pay for visa applications and processing fees, or they may request your personal banking information. DO NOT DO THIS! No offshore drilling or other company requests any type of advance payment as part of any recruiting or hiring process, and never will any ask for personal banking information in an e-mail communication. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED Many of these advertise and guarantee that they will have your details out and you will be working within weeks and even days. Sorry buts it’s not going to happen!

I am still expanding and adding information and currently adding drilling company information by company and also the current job vacancies and how to submit an application and each drilling company page will have the latest job vacancies for that company listed. As jobs come and go daily the general jobs vacant pages will be updated weekly as well so do come and check regularly.

Also the newsletter has had many people sign up and this will give latest REAL employment opportunities and industry news. It helps for new entry candidates to learn as much as they can about what is going on, knowing something helps your chances

Rig Count Continues to Improve

US drilling activity increased sharply by 21 rigs with 1,069 rotary rigs working at the week ending Oct. 30. This is in comparison with 1,971 rigs drilling in the same period last year. Most of the gain is in land operations, up 18 rigs to 1,021 units still active. Drilling in inland waters was up 2 units to 13. Offshore drilling was up 1 rig with 35 units working in US waters, including 34 in the Gulf of Mexico. Of the rigs still working, 330 were drilling for oil, 18 more than the previous week. There were 728 rotary rigs drilling for natural gas, 3 more than previous. There were 11 rigs unclassified. Directional drilling was up 1 unit to 180 and horizontal drilling made a 25-unit jump to 497 rigs active. Among the major producing states, Texas’ weekly rig count increased the most, up 13 to 411. North Dakota and Oklahoma gained 4 rigs each to reach 55 and 77 units, respectively. Colorado was up 3 rigs to 39. Alaska, Louisiana, and New Mexico were all up 1 rig each to respective counts of 6, 164, and 48. Arkansas was unchanged at 38 units working. California lost 1 unit to reach 22 and Wyoming’s count fell 3 to 39. In other states of interest, Pennsylvania remained unchanged at 59 rigs drilling. Utah was up 4 rigs to 19 and West Virginia was up 1 unit to 22.

Rig Fire Off Australia

PTTEP Australasia is now fighting a fire on the Montara wellhead platform in the Timor Sea. The fire broke out during operations to plug the leaking well at the field, which was successfully intercepted over the weekend. The company says the fire broke out around the cantilever section of the West Atlas jack up drilling rig, which is directly above the platform, while heavy mud was being pumped into the well from the West Triton jack up rig about 2 km away. No one was aboard the West Atlas. The rig was evacuated when the oil leak began last August. The Nor Captain fire fighting vessel did pour water onto the fire in the early stages, but it is believed that this vessel has been moved away and is stationed a kilometer or two off the rig area. PTTEP says seawater is also being pumped down the relief well in a bid to wet the gas and help bring the fire under control. The company says the best way to stop the fire is to complete plug the leaking well and stopping the flow of oil and gas to the surface. In late news the well was reported plugged and the fire had also been extinguished but significant damage to rig and platform has resulted

New FPSO for GOM

Keppel Shipyard Limited (Keppel Shipyard) is on track to deliver the first floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel for the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM) to BW Pioneer Ltd, an affiliate of BW Offshore. The FPSO was named at Keppel Shipyard, the vessel BW Pioneer will be turret moored at a water depth of about 2,600 metres – by far the deepest for an FPSO. The BW Pioneer has been leased by Petrobras America Inc. to operate in the Cascade and Chinook fields of the US GoM, with production scheduled for the first quarter of 2010. Designed to handle the harsh operating conditions in GoM, BW Pioneer is equipped with an internal disconnectable Submerged Turret Production (STP) mooring system and outfitted with advanced safety features to withstand environmental loads from currents, waves and wind. In the event of an approaching hurricane, this highly advanced safety feature will allow the FPSO to disengage from site and move on her own propulsion to seek sheltered waters. BW Pioneer has a storage capacity of about 600,000 barrels of oil, a process capacity of 80,000 bopd and gas export facilities of 16 mmscfd.

Pirates Looking at Hostage Swap

THE British couple being held hostage in Somalia could be released in exchange for the freedom of seven captured Somali pirates, it was reported. Paul and Rachel Chandler from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, were sailing their yacht, the Lynn Rival, near the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean when pirates seized them more than a week ago. The group of kidnappers has demanded a $7 million ransom, but the UK Foreign Office has refused to negotiate. Now it has emerged that the pirates will consider freeing the Chandlers in exchange for the release of seven other Somali pirates, captured by European forces last week. The news came from Abdi Yare, a spokesman for the hostage-takers, who said also yesterday that the pirates had moved the couple – earlier held on a Singapore-flagged container ship off the coast – to a location near the pirate lair of Harardhere on the central coast of Somalia. “They were taken to a village outside Harardhere and they are fine so far,” he said. The seven pirates were rounded up in a joint operation by the European Union Naval Force Somalia after they tried to hijack a French fishing vessel 350 nautical miles east of Mogadishu on Tuesday. There is no precedent for captured pirates being swapped for hostages, but such a deal could not be ruled out. The UK Foreign Office declined to discuss its plans, but repeated the fact that it would never make “substantive concessions to hostage-takers”.

Pirates Fire on Warship

A Norwegian warship inspecting fishing boats off the coast of Somalia for suspected pirate activity was caught in heavy gunfire in the early hours of Sunday. The Norwegian sailors, cruising just off the north-eastern Somali coast, were fired upon in the dead of night by a dhow with between five and seven men on board and armed with heavy weaponry and Kalashnikov rifles. These were not innocent fishermen, they were armed with heavy machine-guns and Kalashnikovs. A statement by EU NAVFOR had earlier said "shots were fired when they approached the fourth, they were fired upon -- and clearly became nervous. The boarding party returned fire in self-defence -- and retreated to 1,000 metres (yards), because their main job was to escort a World Food Programme aid ship which had to keep moving.

Ships Pilot Jailed

A California man who piloted a cargo ship that caused a major environmental disaster in 2007 recently began serving a 10-month federal prison sentence. John Cota has begun serving the sentence for his role in the Cosco Busan oil spill. During the incident, on Nov. 7, 2007, approximately 53,000 gallons of oil were discharged when the ship collided with the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The discharge of heavy fuel oil from the Cosco Busan spoiled 26 miles of shoreline, killed more than 2,400 birds of some 50 species, temporarily closed a fishery on the bay and delayed the start of crab fishing season. Tens of millions of dollars in damages were caused to the bridge, ship and private parties. Cleanup costs have totaled around $70 million. In March, Cota pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor crimes of illegally discharging oil in the bay and killing thousands of birds

Much Bigger than the Titanic

It’s five times larger than the Titanic, has seven neighborhoods, an ice rink, a golf course and a 750-seat outdoor amphitheater. The world’s largest cruise ship is finally finished and Friday it began sailing toward its home port in Florida. The Oasis of the Seas will meet its first obstacle when it exits the Baltic Sea and must squeeze under the Great Belt Bridge, which is just 1 foot (30 centimeters) taller than the ship — even after its telescopic smokestacks are lowered. To be on the safe side, the ship — which rises about 20 stories high — will speed up so that it sinks deeper into the water when it passes below the span. Once home, the $1.5 billion floating extravaganza will have more, if less visible, obstacles to duck: a sagging U.S. economy, questions about the consumer appetite for luxury cruises and criticism that such sailing behemoths are damaging to the environment and diminish the experience of traveling. Oasis of the Seas, which is nearly 40 percent larger than the industry’s next-biggest ship, was conceived years before the economic downturn caused desperate cruise lines to slash prices to fill vacant berths. The Oasis of the Seas has 2,700 cabins and can accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew members. The enormous ship features various “neighborhoods” — parks, squares and arenas with special themes. One of them will be a tropical environment, including palm trees and vines among the total 12,000 plants on board. They will be planted after the ship arrives in Fort Lauderdale. In the stern, a 750-seat outdoor theater — modeled on an ancient Greek amphitheater — doubles as a swimming pool by day and an ocean front theater by night. The pool has a diving tower with spring boards and two 33-foot high-dive platforms. An indoor theater seats 1,300 guests. Accommodations include loft cabins, with floor-to-ceiling windows, and 1,600-square-foot luxury suites with balconies overlooking the sea or promenades. One of the “neighborhoods,” named Central Park, features a square with boutiques, restaurants and bars, including a bar that moves up and down three decks, allowing customers to get on and off at different levels. The liner also has four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts, and a youth zone with theme parks and nurseries for children.

The Pirates Get Another Ship

Suspected pirates have hijacked a Thai cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden off the Somali coast, the MV Thor Star, was hijacked on Thursday with unknown number of crew members on board. The Thai ship was hijacked some 200 nautical miles north of Seychelles. There are still conflicting reports as to where the vessel was heading to and the nationalities of the crew members onboard. The Thai-flagged ship is owned by Bangkok-based Thoresen Thai Agencies.

Back to the Titanic

The company that has exclusive rights to salvage the Titanic wants to make another expedition to the world's most famous shipwreck in 2010. RMS Titanic Inc.'s expedition would be the first by the salvor since 2004, though two other expeditions have been to the site since then, including one by "Titanic" director James Cameron. The company went before a judge on Monday to seek a salvage award for its past expeditions, and to inform the court of its plans. They are not only intended to determine a salvage award, but to establish legal guarantees that thousands of Titanic artifacts remain intact as a collection and forever accessible to the public. Some pieces have ended up in London auction houses. The 5,900 pieces of china, ship fittings and personal belongings are valued at more than $110 million and are displayed around the world by Premier Exhibitions Atlanta company. RMS Titanic is a subsidiary of Premier. The first two witnesses Monday testified about management changes at Premier and the perils and costs associated with salvage expeditions to the Titanic. The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in international waters on April 15, 1912, and has been subject to competing legal claims since. An international team led by oceanographer Robert Ballard found it in 1985. Since then, RMS Titanic has retrieved artifacts during six dives.

The Pirates Are Very Busy

Somali pirates appear to be making up for lost time, following the monsoon season which caused a reduction in the number of attacks on shipping off the Somali coast. Since their successful capture of the Chinese bulker DE XIN HAI, reported in these columns last week, pirates have launched an unsuccessful attack on the Italian Ro-Ro vessel JOLLY ROSSO, sailing from South Africa for Italy via the Red Sea, and the Panamanian-flagged bulker AL KHALIZ which they seized along with the crew of 26 – of whom two are Burmese and the balance Indians. Jolly Rosso managed to make good its escape by some smart manoeuvering and increase of speed, despite being fired on with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. The ship was some 400 miles east of Mombasa at the time of the attack. In the case of the Al Khaliq the bulk vessel was sailing in waters about 180 miles off the Seychelles when pirates in two skiffs came storming on board. A maritime air patrol carried out after the attack confirmed that at least six pirates were in control of the ship, with one of the skiffs already taken on board the ship using the vessel’s own gear. There are no reports of any injuries from either ship. Meanwhile the seized Chinese bulker De Xin Hai which was captured last week en route from Richards Bay to India with a cargo of coal, has arrived off the Somali coast near Hobyo. Chinese sources report the ship has ample water and supplies and fuel for one month.
