About the FPSO-conversion

FPSO (Floating Production, Storage, Offtake). About the FPSO-conversion. These are essentially large oil tankers with oil production facilities installed on board. They are anchored to the seabed and the crude oil is carried up to the vessel from subsea manifolds through a hose or piping system. This enters the FPSO via the turret. The oil is then treated and held on board in tanks before being offloaded to oil tankers that cart the oil off to refineries. The production facilities are constructed within modules. These may include seperation and LP compression, seperation and HP compression, Produced Water/Glycol, Water Injection and other specialist modules. The installation will also include a gas turbine electrical power station module, flare tower and living quarters with helideck and safety equipment

The FPSO is now becoming the most popular method of bringing deepwater fields on stream and the eliminate the requirement for very expensive long-distance pipelines to transport oil and gas from wells to shore. If you have worked offshore Brasil you will see how popular they are, I once left a rig for shore and ended up on a helicopter milk run that stopped at virtually every FPSO in the field, about 10 I think.
