oil rig roustabout job

The Roustabout is basically the entry level position offshore in particular drilling

The basic tasks range from assisting in crane operations where loading and unloading materials when required, in particular supply boat operations.

They also assist in various deck related jobs, moving drilling equipment, painting and also maintenance of various drilling equipment.

The work changes constantly based on rig demands and you may end up cleaning one moment and working a boat the next.

A Rig Roustabouts may also be required to assist in helideck and helicopter landing operations.

A good start is to know how to use simple lifting appliances such as basic rigging and slinging, and if you have done a basic rigging course ashore this will help a lot in finding a new position offshore.

In addition if you also have a fork lift operator’s ticket or even a better a crane operator’s certificate or have done a recognized course, this will be highly sought after.

Some drilling contractors ask that the potential roustabout also have a seaman’s ticket or bridge-duty certificate as outlined by STCW-95 certification requirements.

This is somewhat harder to satisfy these days but worth the effort, as is previous sea experience in any capacity. So contact your local Maritime Academy or Marine College and see what they have on offer in the way of basic sea training courses.

Having basic marine or maritime relevant qualifications will put you at the front of any selection process.

REALITY CHECK TIME A reality check for those who have absolutely nothing! You have very little chance to get offshore as a roustabout unless you have some basic and useful skills, so best advice go and invest in your future and get some useful skills to offer. Invest in crane drivers ticket, and a forklifts drivers ticket, and very useful aare riggers ticket as you will need them and it will help you both get a job and advance

Mostly you will get a job through someone you know already in the industry and being at the right place at the right time. Also go try and get a job on a land drilling rig as that way you get experience

To outline what employers want to see, either one or more of the list below and the BOSIET and Medical certificate is a prerequisite, also if you have worked with machinery as career path involve learning to operate machinery

Don’t even apply unless you have Item 4, 5 and 6 and are ready to go at short notice as they take a long time to organise.

In the body of your message declare clearly what skills you have that may be of use if you are new entrant. If you have any educational qualifications, listing them including with a introductory summary of important work experience. Going on about how hard a worker you are and how dependable means nothing. If you have already invested in all the numerous required offshore safety certificates, then start with this. Above all do a spell check of the submission, bad spelling and mediocre grammar turns off potential employers. They say you only get one opportunity to make a first ipression. It is very true!

I have all the compulsory offshore safety certificates, medical certificates and passport and I am prepared to go to work. I do not have any former offshore experience but I am adept with tools and machinery having worked on building sites driving bulldozers and diggers or driving cranes, forklifts, rigging, scaffolding and any other useful machinery maintenance experience (give explanation this) and have good safety ethic (describe your safety knowledge). State your educational attainments and even sporting achievements and show that you are a team player. If you can think of some other experience or qualifications that have some use then say what they are. Put a 100 words or more down and sell yourself. All About an Oil Rig Roustabout Job
