The Rig Derrickman



About the Rig Derrickman

The Derrickman is an important function in any drilling team. The derrickmans main role is to operate the derrick and the equipment in it as well as operate and maintain the mud pumps and the mud mixing equipment.

The Rig-Derrickman directly reports to the Driller and Assistant Driller and works with the Drilling Crew and Mud Engineer. The Lead Floorman and Floormen report directly to the Derrickman
The Rig Derrickman Roles and Responsibilities

The Derrickman performs all his activities in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with the drilling program and under directions from the Driller and Assistant Driller

Perform daily maintenance on all mud pumping, mud mixing and derrick equipment.

Conduct and supervise mud mixing operations under direction of the Mud Engineer.

Maintain housekeeping in all mud mixing areas and derrick to the required standard.

Monitor mud pit volumes and mud properties and report any changes immediately to the Driller and Mud Engineer.

Understand the effects that various chemical additives have on the properties and condition of the drilling fluid.

Provide supervision and guidance for Floormen and Shaker Hand. Ensure instructions given are fully understood and complied with.

Operate all derrick tubular handling equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

Ensure all relevant safety procedures and practices are adhered to during drilling operations.

Know and enforce safe handling practices for all chemicals used in the drilling fluid.

Know and enforce segregation practices for all chemicals stored in mud mixing or storage areas.

Attend safety meetings including pre-tour / task meetings.

Assist in preparation of Job Safety Analysis when required for hazardous situations and changes to normal drilling operations.

Report any incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situations to Driller and Assistant Driller.

Respond to well control situations as directed and practiced in drills.

Maintain records of mud weights, viscosity and mud pit volumes.

Maintain records of mud pump hours.

Maintain records of chemicals including bulk used during mud mixing operations.
