The Rig Driller


About the Rig Driller

The driller conducts the drilling operations and supervise drill crew or roughnecks and floormen.

In the latest 5th and 6th generation drill rigs he sits in a cyber chair, on older rigs he is the one on the brake handle.

The rig-driller reports directly to the Toolpusher and Tourpusher and the Assistant Driller and Derrickman report to him.
About the Rig-Driller Responsibilities

Carry out drilling operations safely in accordance with the drilling program and directives from the Toolpusher or Tourpusher.

Understand the clients rules and the drill company procedures for well control and blowout prevention.

Ensure that all drilling parameters are followed and adjust or alter as instructed to maintain performance.

Supervise drilling equipment preparation for planned operations.

Provide the drill crew with relevant instructions for current and planned operations.

Ensure instructions given are fully complied with by all drilling personnel involved in the task.

Ensure cleanliness and housekeeping of the drilling package and drill floor is maintained at the required standard.

Supervise planned maintenance carried out on drilling and associated equipment.

Supervise repairs on drilling and associated equipment in conjunction with rig mechanics, rig electrical and electronics and rig hydraulics technicians.

Demonstrate commitment to the drilling company’s safety policies through leadership and guidance.

Ensure all relevant safety procedures and practices are adhered to during drilling operations.

Attend and monitor safety meetings including pre-tour / task meetings.

Prepare Job Safety Analysis as required for hazardous situations and changes to normal drilling operations.

Report any incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situations to Toolpusher or Tourpusher.

Assist in training to ensure all personnel are competent to perform their allocated job.

Conduct relevant drilling operation safety drills when required. Respond to well control situations as directed and practiced in drills.

Assist Toolpusher and Tourpusher to maintain records relevant to drilling department.

Accurately complete daily drilling reports. Maintain accurate records of tubular and tool dimensions and tubular tally’s.
